ROUNDUP : Pospich Claims Ojai Tennis Singles Title

Natasha Pospich of Woodland Hills won the girls’ 18-and-under singles title and Camarillo’s sister duo of Amelia and Molly White won the girls’ 16-and-under doubles championship Saturday at the 91st Ojai Valley Tennis tournament.

In men’s junior college doubles, Pierce’s Al Martinez and Jason Gary advanced to today’s final with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Grossmont’s Kelly and Mike Asvig.

Cypress’ John Swaino defeated Martinez, 6-2, 6-4, in the semifinals of the men’s junior college singles. Golden West’s Andy Stewart defeated Gary, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.

Pospich beat Ditta Huber of La Jolla, 6-1, 6-4, in the final.

Amelia and Molly White bested Amanda and Amber Basica of Lomita, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, to win the doubles title.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Crespi 3, Torrance 0-- Freshman right-hander Jeff Suppan (3-2) threw a no-hitter in a consolation game of the Redondo-Palos Verdes tournament at Pierce College.

Crespi (14-7-1), which recorded a one-hitter in a 1-0 defeat of previously unbeaten St. John Bosco on Friday, has a streak of 18 consecutive scoreless innings.

Culver City 3, Alemany 2 (11 innings)--Freshmen pitchers Rob Nary and Eddie Bushey combined on an eight-hitter, but Culver City’s Mauricio Estavil hit a solo homer with nobody out in the bottom of the 11th in a Redondo-Palos Verdes tournament game.

Steve Pacheco and Leo Tejada each had two hits for Alemany (12-11).

Palos Verdes 5, Notre Dame 4--Vinnie Orlando hit a two-run homer in the first inning, but Notre Dame (13-10-1) didn’t manage another hit until Kevin Milligan’s single in the sixth in a consolation game of the Redondo-Palos Verdes tournament.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Ventura 5, Pierce 3--Right-hander Mike Teron earned a win and drove in three runs with three hits to lead host Ventura (21-14, 10-10) in a Western State Conference game.

Carl McFadden had three hits and Scott Cadenhead added two for Pierce (16-21, 7-13).

Cal Lutheran 9-5, Pomona-Pitzer 3-2--Dave Leonhardt was six for eight and Peter Washington and Leonard Matsumoto each hit solo home runs for Cal Lutheran (25-11) in a nonconference doubleheader.

SOFTBALL

Cal Lutheran 4-4, UC San Diego 3-1--Leslie Stevens’ one-out single drove in the game-winning run in the 11th inning in the opener, and Stevens tossed a six-hitter in the nightcap for Cal Lutheran (29-10). Cal Lutheran extended its winning streak to five games.

Hart 6, Agoura 0--Hart pitcher Kym Weil struck out 21 batters and surrendered just six singles in two games of the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Weil pitched a one-hitter, walked none and fanned nine Santa Paula batters in a 6-0 first-round win. In a championship quarterfinal against defending Southern Section 1-A Division champion Agoura (14-5), Hawaii-bound Weil (19-1) recorded 12 strikeouts and allowed five singles in a 6-0 win.

The Indians (20-2) will face Newbury Park in a championship semifinal Saturday at Los Cerritos Park.

Agoura 1, Notre Dame 0--Melissa Thatcher (14-4) threw a three-hitter and was two for three to lead Agoura (14-4) in a Thousand Oaks tournament game.

Thatcher (14-4) struck out four and walked four and teammate Rachel Clarke drove in the game’s lone run with a two-out single in the third.

Notre Dame 1, Santa Paula 0--Senior right-hander Becca Berline pitched a no-hitter and came within a fifth-inning of a perfect game in a consolation game of the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Berline (12-6) faced 21 batters, struck out nine and walked none. Notre Dame is 12-6.

COLLEGE SWIMMING

Western State Conference Championships--Valley College finished third in both the men’s and women’s divisions at Valley College.

Santa Monica won the men’s team title with 437 points, followed by Ventura with 417 and Valley with 341. Canyons was fifth with 246 and Pierce was last with 143.

Ventura won the women’s team title with 421 points, followed by Cuesta with 386 and Valley with 351. Canyons was fifth with 139 and Pierce last with 90.
