All guides provide super detail, excellent vignettes and colorful descriptions.

“Ranch Vacations,” by Eugene Kilgore, is one of the few guides devoted to the outdoor life. It will open your eyes to a world of unforgettable pleasures, wholesome fun and natural beauty. The book describes more than 200 ranches in 26 states that offer, among other activities, horseback riding and fireside community singing.

Ranch vacations today provide gourmet food, tennis, swimming, white-water rafting, helicopter fishing, a massage and more. The amenities, rates, accommodations and entertainment possibilities are listed.

Text is sprinkled with 40 pages of black and white and color photos (John Muir, $18.95).

“Japan Solo,” by Eiji Kanno and Constance O’Keefe, offers authoritative observations, supported by 193 maps, on how to enjoy the cultural riches of Japan. This self-help guide offers advice on transportation, restaurants and accommodations. It also provides tips on checking baggage, communications, currency and where to find restrooms, and includes a collection of conversation cards that should help you with basic questions (Warner Books, $14.95).
