A vigorous storm hatched in the Gulf of Alaska dumped heavy rain on some areas of Orange County on Monday morning and dropped scattered showers in the afternoon.

The early-morning showers were blamed for 24 minor traffic accidents reported throughout the county in the morning, California Highway Patrol Officer Linda Burrus said.

At Newport Beach, 15-m.p.h. winds created breakers between four and six feet high and brought out loyal bands of surfers.

“We have about 5,000 people when we (would) normally have 20,000,” lifeguard Mike Malloy said. “I wish it would get sunny. It makes the day go faster.”

Joe Haug, a spokesman with the county’s Environmental Management Agency, said up to .08 of an inch was recorded in some areas in central and South County cities Monday.

Clear skies and slightly warmer temperatures are predicted for today, according to WeatherData Inc., which provides forecasts for The Times.
