Greg LeMond makes his first major race appearance in the United States since last year’s dramatic Tour de France victory when he sets out Thursday on the $300,000 Tour de Trump.

LeMond has been training in Northern California for several weeks in hopes of striking form after a disappointing season in Europe where he began some 15 pounds overweight. Suffering from a viral infection, LeMond withdrew from several European races and had little success in those he entered.

LeMond, who had health problems during last year’s inaugural Tour de Trump, named for the race’s co-sponsor Donald Trump, would like to erase the memory of his miserable 27th place finish.

He faces a strong field in the 10-day, 1,107-mile event that winds through six states over 13 stages.
