Pitcher Eaton Stifles PLNC as UCSD Wins, 13-1
Dann Eaton (4-2) pitched six shutout innings before yielding a run to visiting Point Loma Nazarene as UC San Diego won the nonconference baseball game, 13-1.
The Tritons had 13 players with hits, including Joe DeFranco and Ernie Isola with three each. UCSD improved to 18-15-2; PLNC fell to 15-30-1.
MEN’S TENNIS
UC San Diego lost at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles and at No. 1 doubles but managed a 5-4 victory over host Point Loma Nazarene.
Jeff Bethard won at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-1, over Darin Bassett, and also at No. 3 doubles.
PLNC fell to 10-14.
SENIOR TENNIS
Georgia Turner of El Cajon was upset by Pam Mitchel of Bellevue, Wash., 6-2, 6-1, in first-round play of the women’s 50s singles at the National Hardcourt Tennis Championships at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
The only seeded player in the first round, No. 7 Carol Wood of Rockville, Md., defeated Irene Higbee of Linwood, N.J., 6-0, 6-0.
