Police chasing four suspects in a South Pasadena grocery store robbery captured two after a freeway chase, lost a third and shot and killed the fourth after cornering him under a house in El Sereno, authorities said Wednesday.
The incident began about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday when three men walked into the Vons store on Fair Oaks Avenue and rifled two registers and the manager’s office. The men escaped with about $3,000 to a car waiting outside, South Pasadena Police Sgt. Bud Swapp said.
About an hour later a police dog cornered one of the suspects under a house in the 100 block of West Avenue 34. Two officers fired six rounds and killed the man when he reached for a gun, Los Angeles Police Sgt. Elmer Pellegrino said.
The dead suspect, described only as a 44-year-old man, was not identified until relatives could be notified. Neither of the two officers was injured.
