El Sereno Fire House Receiving New Look

Share

No alarms rang and no Dalmatians barked, but the Old Fire Station on Huntington Drive in the El Sereno area was nevertheless the scene of excitement galore last month when the Barrio Action Group Inc., kicked off a $250,000 fund-raising campaign to restore the building, damaged by the 1987 Whittier earthquake.

Forced to move out of the building to temporary quarters after the temblor, the group plans to remodel the old firehouse, also known as the El Sereno Municipal Building, so that it can safely house its counseling, educational, recreational and employment-training services for troubled youths.

The city of Los Angeles has granted a 55-year lease to the 13-year-old organization, and Kraft General Foods has provided a $50,000 challenge grant for the construction effort.
