From Times Staff and Wire Reports

12 Supermarkets to Get TV: Turner Broadcasting System Inc. and ActMedia announced details of their plans to test the Checkout Channel, a programming service shown in supermarkets. They said it will be tested at 12 stores in six cities, beginning in August. The service will beam news and commercials to participating supermarkets, where television monitors will be placed near checkout aisles. Turner’s Cable News Network and Headline Service will supply news progranming, and ActMedia will sell commercial time and supply the electronic hardware. If the tests prove successful, ActMedia expects to install the service in up to 5,000 supermarkets by mid-1992.
