Southland Celebrations to Fete Mexican Holiday

Many Cinco de Mayo celebrations are scheduled this weekend. Major events include:

Olvera Street, 845 N. Alameda St., (213) 628-3562. Folkloric dancers, musicians and entertainers from Mexico will perform Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

* Lincoln Park, 3501 Valley Blvd., East Los Angeles, (213) 237-1726. Food booths and family-oriented events Friday from 3 to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m.

* Penmar Recreation Center, 1341 Lake St., Los Angeles, (213) 396-8735. Mexican cuisine, games, pinatas and entertainment from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

* Wilmington Recreation Center, 325 Neptune Ave., Wilmington, (213) 548-7645. Entertainment and food booths will highlight the celebration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

* Branford Recreation Center, 13310 Branford St., Arleta, (818) 893-4923. Food booths, a pinata party and folkloric dancing will be featured from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

* Pacoima Recreation Center, 10943 Herrick Ave., Pacoima, (818) 899-1950). Aztec dancers, musical entertainment and food booths will be offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

* Belvedere Park, 4912 Brooklyn Ave., Boyle Heights, (213) 268-9302. A carnival, baby contest, 10-K run, soccer tournament and dance Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

* Emelia Mayberry Park, 13201 E. Meyer Road, near Whittier, (818) 369-4073. Entertainment, food concessions and a KIIS-FM remote radio broadcast, noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

* Centennial Regional Park, 1800 S. Fairview St., Santa Ana, (213) 856-5151. Mexican entertainers including Los Huracanes del Norte and Lucia Mendez will sing and dance from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.

* Virginia Park, 2200 Virginia Ave., Santa Monica, (213) 450-9645. From noon to 5 p.m. Saturday ethnic food, games, mariachis and ballet folklorico dancers will be featured.

* Salt Lake Park, 3401 E. Florence Ave., Huntington Park; (213) 585-1155. Entertainment, displays, demonstrations, games, food booths and a 30-ride carnival; festival concludes Monday.
