CYCLING / TOUR DE TRUMP : Ludwig, East German Pro, Wins the First Two Stages

Olaf Ludwig, one of six cyclists who recently became East Germany’s first professional athletes, won both stages of the Tour de Trump bicycle race Friday and moved into the lead by four seconds over Raul Alcala of Mexico.

First, Ludwig, 30, winner of the 1988 Olympic road-race gold medal, won the 95.3-mile race from Wilmington, Del., to Baltimore in 3 hours 50 minutes 19 seconds.

Then Friday night, riding on a 28.9-mile course wet by a strong afternoon rain, Ludwig sprinted out of a large pack and claimed the Baltimore Criterium by a bike length in 59 minutes 46 seconds.

Alcala, who won Thursday’s prologue, leads third-place Bauer by one second in the standings.

Reigning Tour de France champion Greg LeMond of Wayzata, Minn., finished 112th in the road race and 103rd in the criterium. He is in 72nd place in the 131-rider field, 35 seconds behind the leader.

Victor Olarte of Colombia collided with Canadian amateur Sean Way about 62 miles into the first race, fell on his head and was unconscious for several minutes. He was taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center by helicopter with a broken wrist and a concussion.

Another crash during the first stage involved 15 riders, but only Mario Chisea of Italy was unable to continue. He was not seriously hurt.

The third and four stages of the 1,107-mile race are scheduled for today in Virginia. The event concludes May 13 in Boston.
