Brush Fires Hit Sylmar, West Hills

Two brush fires on Sunday charred about five acres near Veterans Memorial Park in Sylmar and about three acres in the unincorporated area of West Hills, a Los Angeles city Fire Department spokesman said.

Neither fire caused any injuries, evacuations, or structural damage, spokesman Alan Barrios said.

The Sylmar fire was reported about 4:30 p.m. and contained in less than an hour, Barrios said. A dozen fire trucks and three water-bearing helicopters responded to the fire.

Barrios said houses on the east side of the fire were threatened at one point, but the helicopters doused the flames before they reached any structures. A 50-yard dirt barrier protected other homes neighboring the park, at the corner of Sayre Street and Simshaw Avenue.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, Barrios said.

Two fire companies were called to the 5:34 p.m. blaze at Woolsey Canyon Road and Valley Circle Boulevard in West Hills, Barrios said.

The dry, hot weather was blamed for starting the fire, he said.
