A high-speed chase ended early Sunday when two people aboard a stolen motorcycle crashed into a station wagon and were killed as they were being pursued by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies, authorities said.

Deputies spotted the motorcycle speeding on Crenshaw Boulevard near 43rd Street in unincorporated View Park about 3 a.m. and pulled up behind it to cite the driver, Los Angeles Police Sgt. Tim Tyree said. But the motorcycle sped north on Crenshaw and slammed broadside into the station wagon at Coliseum Street, he said.

“The crash destroyed the motorcycle, and the people on it were dead at the scene,” Tyree said, adding that investigators determined later that the motorcycle had been stolen. The victims’ identities were not released pending notification of relatives.

The station wagon was damaged, but the driver apparently was not seriously hurt, though he was hospitalized for observation, Tyree said.

The accident is being investigated by Los Angeles police because it occurred within the city limits.
