COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Santa Barbara Beats CSUN on Waco Homer

Share

UC Santa Barbara’s David Waco hit a ninth-inning, solo home run to propel the Gauchos to a 9-8 win over Cal State Northridge on Tuesday in Goleta.

Waco’s homer, his fifth of the season and his fourth against Matador pitching this year, offset a comeback in which Northridge had rallied from a 7-0 deficit to tie the score, 8-8.

Waco, a sophomore, played for Chatsworth High before leaving for Santa Barbara.

Northridge scored six runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by Scott Sharts’ grand slam, his 21st home run of the season. Sharts is now tied for second on the school single-season list.

Then, with the Matadors trailing, 8-6, in the eighth, Craig Clayton and Scott Richardson each drove in a run to tie the score.

The nonconference loss dropped Northridge to 31-20. Division I UC Santa Barbara improved to 38-16.
