An Oceanside woman was in good condition Wednesday after her throat was slashed, and a suspect was in County Jail at Vista, booked on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, authorities said.

Patricia Dunlavey, 50, and a friend, Lewis Hager, 57, were attacked about 5:40 p.m. Tuesday by a knife-wielding man, said Bob George, a spokesman for the Oceanside Police Department.

Police arrested Orlando Marshall, 54, about an hour after the incident. A weapon had not been found.

The attack occurred when Dunlavey and Hager approached the man as he was swinging a knife at Dunlavey’s dogs, which she had tied up across the street from Brother Beno’s Soup Kitchen in the 300 block of Minnesota Avenue while the two ate dinner there, George said.

Dunlavey was cut on the left side of her throat and received superficial cuts on her chest, George said. She was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. Hager was not injured.

George described all three people as transients.

No bail was set for Marshall. A court appearance is scheduled for today.
