A Sepulveda man was killed when he yelled “Russian Roulette!” and shot himself in the throat with a gun he apparently thought was unloaded, Los Angeles police said today.

Anthony Roseli, 19, was fatally wounded about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in an apartment in 8800 block of Langdon Avenue, Lt. Harvie Eubank said. Two men and two women witnessed the shooting.

Roseli was described by police as an associate of gang members who lived in the complex. Eubank said he was carrying a .38-caliber revolver and was apparently trying to impress gang members by brandishing it while standing in front of the apartment building Wednesday evening.

Roseli then went inside his apartment with some friends and began to unload and reload the gun repeatedly.

“He apparently miscalculated,” Eubank said. “He thought it was unloaded. He spun the barrel and yelled, ‘Oh, Russian Roulette!’ Then he put the gun to the side of his throat and pulled the trigger.”

Roseli died at the scene. Eubank said investigators found there had been two bullets in the gun when he shot himself.
