One man was in fair condition after being shot from a moving car early Thursday, officials said.

The man, Jason O’Keefe, was a passenger in the back seat of a car that was traveling north on Interstate 15 about 1 a.m. when two shots were fired from a car behind, said Lt. George Saldamando of the San Diego Police Department’s gang unit.

The first car sped up, drove across the lanes, got onto southbound I-15, then entered westbound California 94, Saldamando said. The second car followed and this time drove alongside the car and fired five more shots, he said.

One bullet hit O’Keefe, 22, in the side and back. The driver pulled over and called help from a highway call box, while the second car continued west on the the freeway, Saldamando said.

Although O’Keefe does not appear to have gang affiliations, the driver and the front-seat passenger may have gang ties, Saldamando said.

O’Keefe was taken to UCSD Medical Center, where the bullet was removed, said Caryl Stone, a hospital spokeswoman.
