THE SIDELINES : Detroiters Want to Save Stadium
A majority of Detroit-area residents want to save the 78-year-old city-owned Tiger Stadium, according to a survey by a Detroit newspaper.
About 52% of the 400 residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties said they favor renovation; 30% said it doesn’t matter; 16% would prefer replacing the building; and 2% had no response, the Detroit Free Press said in today’s editions.
“I would hope that the Tigers would pay attention to this,” said Frank Rashid, a founder of the Tiger Stadium Fan Club, which has presented a renovation plan to the Detroit City Council.
The Tigers surveyed season ticket-holders earlier by mail but have refused to reveal the results.
Mayor Coleman Young and Tigers owner Tom Monaghan said the stadium is deteriorating and would cost too much to renovate. They have reviewed sites in Detroit and suburbs for a possible new stadium.
