THE SIDELINES : $50,000 Prize for World Record

A prize of $50,000 will be offered for a world record in the shot put at the May 20 Jack in the Box Invitational at UCLA’s Drake Stadium, it was announced today.
Randy Barnes, the 1988 Olympic silver medalist, seeks to better the mark of 75 feet 8 inches held by East German Ulf Timmermann. Barnes set the indoor mark of 74-4 1/4 at the 1989 Sunkist Invitational and put the shot 73-1 April 22 at the Mt. San Antonio Relays.
