SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Teachers, District Reach Agreement

Ending more than a year of negotiations, Capistrano Unified School District officials and the local teachers union reached a tentative agreement late Monday, authorities said.

The agreement, expected to be ratified this week by the Capistrano Unified Educators Assn., sets a contract for the 1989-90 school year.

Union representatives agreed to a 7% cost-of-living salary raise retroactive to July 1, 1989, and an additional .5% increase retroactive to Jan. 1 of this year, said Jacqueline Cerra, district spokeswoman.

The tentative agreement also calls for a $5,000 increase in life insurance benefits and a $250 increase in an annual stipend for teachers with master’s degrees or doctorates. The stipend affects about 450 of the district’s 1,200 teachers, Cerra said.

District officials won concessions from the union to support new disciplinary standards and to cut costs in the vision plan by having contact lens replacement covered every two years instead of every year.
