Five Soviet Boxers Hope to Stay Unbeaten

Five Soviet boxers will attempt to keep their professional records perfect tonight at the San Diego Sports Arena. The six-fight card, which also includes San Diego’s Tony “Bazooka” DeLuca in the 10-round main event, begins at 6 p.m.

The card will be televised live by USA cable network, but it is blacked out in San Diego.

The most interesting match-up figures to be between Soviet heavyweight Yuri Vaulin (4-0) and Joey Parker (13-7) of Las Vegas. Although he has had more than 250 amateur bouts, Vaulin has never fought anyone with as much pro experience as Parker.

“We’d like it if (Parker) didn’t have that much experience,” Vaulin’s trainer Tommy Gallagher said. “But we’ll be ready.”

Soviet featherweight Alex Artemiev (2-0, 2 knockouts) will fight Javier Torres (1-3-1) and his brother, Sergei (2-0, 2 knockouts), will box Robert Olvera (2-4). Middleweight Victor Egorov (1-0) will take on Tyrone King of San Diego (1-2) and Igor Rushzinikov (1-0) fights Ramon Zavala (11-2).

DeLuca (17-3-3), who will be attempting to rebound from a recent loss to Michael Carbajal, is fighting Jose Quirino (28-5) of Tijuana.
