Sunny Hills High School won three top awards and two honorable mentions to lead all entrants in the fifth annual Times Orange County High School Journalism Awards competition.
Sunny Hills’ student newspaper, The Accolade, was named the best issue in the division for papers of five or more pages. Orange and Foothill high schools received honorable mentions in the division.
Paw Prints, the Los Amigos High newspaper, was named the best issue in the four-pages-and-under division, with Garden Grove receiving an honorable mention.
Individual top awards went to Sheila McDonald, Dana Hills (news story); Elizabeth Bangs, Sunny Hills (feature story); Duncan C. Delp, Garden Grove (staff editorial); Betsy Burbridge, Orange (sports story); Vanessa Flint, Orange (feature photo); and Jennifer Mahr, Sunny Hills (cartoon/illustration).
Honorable mentions were received by Heather Johnson, Sunny Hills (news story); Anne Chen, Capistrano Valley (feature story); Dawn Stone, El Toro (staff editorial); Jeffrey Lee, Sunny Hills (sports story); Vanessa Flint, Orange(feature photo); and Jonathan Han, Savanna (cartoon/illustration).
Three high school seniors were named winners of a Serafines de Orange County public speaking contest last week that asked contestants to address the importance of education for Latinos.
Tom Saenz, a senior at El Modena High School in Orange, won the first prize of $700. The $600 second prize went to Westminster High senior Angelica Villicana. And Karen Wasinger, a senior at Savanna High in Anaheim, won the third prize of $500.
Serafines is a nonprofit organization formed by the California Angels to promote education for Latinos, said Manuel Esqueda, the organization’s president.
“People who like this sort of thing will find this the sort of thing they like.”
