Share

The North Park Theatre Foundation will celebrate the new ownership of the North Park Theatre by throwing its own block party, dubbed “A Carnival of the Arts,” beginning at 2:30 p.m. today at 29th Street and University Avenue.

The festival is in honor of the city of San Diego’s March 5 decision to purchase the theater. City Councilman John Hartley will present a proclamation from the city at 3 p.m.

Entertainers in classical, country-Western, jazz and pop music will be featured, and the event will open with a Chinese lion dance. The Ballet Folklorico and comedian Michael Byers will also perform.

The North Park Theatre Foundation is composed of nearly 40 arts organizations representing various ethnic, age and socioeconomic groups that joined to create a plan for the revitalization and reopening of the North Park Theatre.

The theater was built in 1928, the first in San Diego designed for sound motion pictures.
