UCSD’s Behrens Wins Division III Singles Championship

Top-seeded Christine Behrens of the UC San Diego won the NCAA Division III women’s singles tennis championship in straight sets on Saturday in Trenton, N.J.

Behrens, a senior from Rancho Palos Verdes, beat fourth-seeded Tracy Peel of Washington College of Maryland, 6-4, 6-2, for her first national title. Behrens finished with a 20-4 record.

MEN’S TENNIS

Secondseeded Sig Huber and Chris Belloli of UC San Diego were eliminated in the doubles semifinals of the NCAA Division III men’s tennis championships in Swarthmore, Pa.

Huber and Belloli lost to Scott Milener and Bobby Hession of Rochester, 6-2, 6-4.

Huber and Belloli, who finished the season 13-4, beat Chicago’s Steve Ivanovich and Vivak Sidhoran, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.

SOCCER

The San Diego Nomads defeated the Portland Timbers, 2-0, to move to 4-4 and stay in first place of the Western Soccer League Southern Division.

Nomads goalkeeper Anton Nistl had his first shutout, and Jerome Watson and John Gerrard scored San Diego.

TRACK AND FIELD

San Diego State’s men finished sixth in the Western Athletic Conference track and field championships in Fort Collins, Colo. The Aztecs scored 58 points to 245 for winner Brigham Young and 185 for runner-up Texas El Paso.

SDSU’s best finish was a second in the 1,600 relay (3:11.55). UTEP won in 3:11.34.

CYCLING

Bob Nunz of SDSU finished seventh in the men’s 60-mile road race at the U.S. Collegiate Road Cycling Championships at Stanford, which qualified him for the U.S. Cycling Federation nationals.

The Aztecs’ Debbie Gunnerson was 15th in the women’s 30-mile road race, and teamed with Stephanie Lucero to finish fourth in a 7.5-mile team time trial.
