COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Sacramento City Rallies to Eliminate Golden West, 2-1

Sacramento City College scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday to beat Golden West, 2-1, and eliminate the Rustlers from the state community college softball tournament in Sunnyvale.

Golden West (35-16) had defeated Cypress, 5-1, and Moorpark, 8-3, earlier Saturday. Lisa Kaufman picked up both victories when the Rustlers staged late-inning rallies.

But in Golden West’s third game of the day, it was Sacramento that rallied and Kaufman (23-9) lost.

Golden West outhit Sacramento, 9-3, but Tracy Lopez led off the seventh with a single off Kaufman’s glove. Third baseman Tara Snyder’s throwing error on Krista Margetich’s (CQ)bunt put runners on second and third. KC (CQ)Clark then hit a ground ball to second to drive in the tying run. Holly Weibert then grounded to shortstop Gretchen Bock, who had no play at the plate.

Against Cypress, the Rustlers’ five-run rally in the sixth was keyed by Bock’s two-run home run. The 5-1 victory eliminated Cypress (40-8). Kaufman pitched 6 2/3 innings of five-hit, shutout relief.

Against Moorpark, the Rustlers capitalized on five singles, a Raiders, 8-3.

Golden West took a 3-1 lead in the sixth on Kaufman’s two-run homer. Kaufman pitched the final two innings in relief.

In the state men’s community college tennis tournament at Santa Barbara Community College:

Cypress College’s John Swaino won his singles matches in the first two rounds, defeating Mark Van Ornum of Fresno City College, 6-2, 6-4, and Ryan Edwards of Foothill, 6-4, 6-2.

Swaino advances to today’s semifinals to face Carl Hines, who led Saddleback to its third consecutive state team title Friday.

Hines, the Gauchos’ No. 1 player, defeated Chad Rosser of Foothill, 6-0, 6-4, and Mark Edmunds of West Valley, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 Saturday.

In another singles match, Jay Quimby of Foothill defeated Scott Hansen of Saddleback, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

The Cypress doubles team of Swaino and Bobby Carlton lost its first-round match to a team from Fresno City College.

Hinds and Stan Sanders of Saddleback defeated Bob Piccolrauz cqand Jim Daily of Modesto, 6-1, 6-0, and Nick Zinmeister cqand Brian London of College of the Desert, 6-2, 6-4.
