Shots were exchanged early Sunday in Normal Heights between a woman’s ex-husband and the male friend she called for help, saying her former spouse was holding her hostage, police said.

A SWAT unit was summoned at 1:42 a.m. to an apartment complex in the 3800 block of Adams Avenue after Sgt. Paul Dyresen heard a woman scream while on his way to another call, a Police Department spokesman said.

Dyresen and Officer Lance Farr went to investigate and confronted a man with a shotgun, the spokesman said. The man was identified as Greg Hogan, who said he received a call earlier in the evening from Mary Pierce telling him that her ex-husband, Jeff Pierce, was holding her hostage, according to police.

Police said Pierce agreed to surrender after the SWAT unit was summoned. Pierce was booked into County Jail on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, as well as false imprisonment, the spokesman said. Hogan was not arrested.
