City officials and supporters of Israel attended a rally in front of City Hall in downtown Los Angeles Wednesday to mark the 23rd anniversary of the end of The Six-Day War that united Israel’s capital, Jerusalem.

Mayor Tom Bradley’s office proclaimed May 23 “Jerusalem Day,” corresponding to the Hebrew calendar date on which the war between Israel and Jordan for control of the city ended.

Elementary school students from Temple Beth Am’s Pressman Academy in West Los Angeles sang popular Israeli songs as several city officials listened.

The rally was sponsored by the Jewish Federation Council of Los Angeles, which organizes a social service exchange program between Los Angeles and Jerusalem. Israeli Consulate General in Los Angeles Ran Ronen read from a letter prepared for the ceremony by the mayor of Jerusalem, Teddy Kolleck, urging better understanding and mutual respect between various ethnic groups.
