The jet stream--strong, high-altitude winds originating east of Japan--is blowing fairly strongly through San Diego and will keep temperatures in the comfortable 60- to 70-degree range over the Memorial Day weekend, according to the National Weather Service in San Diego.

“We can’t avoid the night and morning low clouds. May and June are the two cloudiest months of the year,” said forecaster Wilbur Shigehara. “But we’re going to have very comfortable weather and sunny afternoons through Memorial Day.”

Beach temperatures will hover between 64 and 68 degrees, with a water temperature of 66. The surf will roll in at 3 to 4 feet.

Tides will be unusually high and low today, but no big surf is expected. The tide will rise to 7.3 feet today at 10:31 p.m. after a morning low of -2.1 feet at 5:01 a.m. On Saturday, the highest tide of 6.9 feet will occur at 11:21 p.m. after a morning low of -1.9 feet at 5:53 a.m. Tides will return to a normal height of 4 to 5 feet by Monday.

Coastal temperatures are expected to range from 68 to 74 today through Monday, with nighttime lows of 50 to 62 degrees.

Highs in inland areas will top out at 80 degrees and fall to 52 to 58 at night, Shigehara said, and mountain highs will rise to 65 to 70 degrees, into the 30s at night. The temperature in the desert is expected to approach 100 degrees, ranging from 92 to 98 and dipping to 58 to 67 at night.

Overall, the weather should be quite nice going into Memorial Day, Shigehara said. Days are growing longer, and summer is just three weeks away. The sun will rise at 5:43 a.m. on Memorial Day and set at 7:49 p.m.
