A Piper 18 Super-Cub aircraft crashed just short of the runway at the Fullerton Municipal Airport today and hit a telephone pole, injuring the two men on board, a fire official said.

The crash occurred at 10:47 a.m. in an open space in an industrial area near Artesia Avenue and just short of the runway. Names of the injured were not immediately known, and it was unclear how seriously injured they are.

Arriving paramedics placed the men on back boards because of possible back injuries, officials said.

Fire Marshal Marc Martin said the men “managed to get out of the airplane under their own power. When the firefighters arrived, they were out of the plane.”

“There was no fire,” Martin said. “There was some fuel which had spilled from the airplane. Both patients have injuries. (I) don’t know the extent of their injuries.”

They were treated at the scene and transported to St. Jude Hospital in Fullerton.

“Nobody on the ground was injured, and, as far as I know, there was no other damage on the ground,” Martin said.
