Former Masters champion Larry Mize shot a three-under-par 69 to build a one-shot lead in the second round of the Atlanta tournament Friday.

Mize had a nine-under-par 135 total for his two rounds over the hilly, 7,018-yard Atlanta Country Club course to hold the lead he shared with Australian Wayne Grady and upstart Steve Lowery in the opening round.

He held a one-shot advantage over Howard Twitty, who shot his second 68.

Poor chip shots over the green cost Mize his only bogeys, on the seventh and ninth holes, but he finished the day with a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th.

South African Nick Price, who tied for second last week in the Colonial, was alone in third place with a 69 for 137.

Morris Hatalsky had the best round of the first two days, a seven-under 65, that got him into a four-way tie at 138. Wayne Levi, who had an eagle-3 on the 11th, shot 66, Keith Clearwater 68 and Grady 72 to match Hatalsky’s 36-hole score.

Alice Ritzman, winless in 12 years on the LPGA tour, birdied five holes to take a two-shot lead after the second round of the Corning (N.Y.) tournament.

Ritzman started the round tied at three-under 68 with six other players. She shot another 68 to finish at 136 after two rounds on the 6,006-yard Corning Country Club Course.

“I didn’t feel like I putted the ball as well today as yesterday,” Ritzman said. “But I hit a lot of fairways and greens.”

Jane Geddes, Sherri Turner and Trisha Johnson were two shots back at 138. Turner, the 1988 Corning champion, birdied four holes and had no bogeys for the day’s low score--67.
