Times’ S.D. Edition Takes 9 Media Society Awards

The San Diego County edition of the Los Angeles Times won five first-place awards, two second-place awards and two third-place honors in the 1990 San Diego Society of Professional Journalists contest. The winning 1989 entries were announced Sunday.

In deadline news reporting for newspapers with circulation over 100,000, Times staff writers Richard A. Serrano, Leonard Bernstein, Tom Gorman and Anthony Perry captured top honors for their story on an explosion that destroyed the van of the wife of guided-missile cruiser Vincennes commander Will Rogers at a La Jolla intersection.

Bernstein teamed with staff writer Barry M. Horstman to win first place in feature magazine writing for their in-depth look at San Diego Mayor Maureen O’Connor in the Los Angeles Times Magazine.

Times staffer Bob Nightengale won first place in sports writing for a story about Oceanside High School student Jerry Garrett, a blue-chip athlete ineligible to play sports because of low grades.

Photographer Vince Compagnone won first prize for sports photography with a shot of a football pass being broken up by a defender.

Perry also won both first- and third-place awards for his column “San Diego At Large.” Edition editor Dale Fetherling took a second-place award for an editorial on Sheriff John Duffy. Calendar news editor Glenn Doggrell won a second-place award for a feature headline, and sports writer Curt Holbreich took third place in sports writing.

Also in the large newspaper category, the San Diego Tribune took 10 first-place awards, 10 second-place awards and eight third-place awards. The San Diego Union took two first-place awards, three second-place awards and five third-place awards.
