The Atlanta Braves probably will select shortstop Chipper Jones of Jacksonville, Fla., No. 1 today in the baseball free-agent draft in New York. Jones has committed to a baseball scholarship at the University of Miami but is likely to exchange that commitment for a large bonus.
Atlanta had sought to pick right-handed pitcher Todd Van Poppel of Arlington, Tex., but Van Poppel has said that he would attend the University of Texas instead of turning professional.
