Lewis University’s men’s basketball team will compete in the Cuban Cup this month, the first U.S. college team to play in Cuba since Fidel Castro took power in 1959, the school said today.

The international tournament June 17-21 will feature national teams from Cuba and Mexico and club teams from the Soviet Union, Venezuela and Brazil, said Jim Bowers, Lewis sports information director.

“We’re supposed to play five or six games, but the exact number of teams and the exact schedule are still unknown,” Bowers said.

USA Basketball, the national governing body for amateur basketball, could not field a national team for the tournament, said Gay Miranda, assistant to Executive Director Bill Walls.

“The men’s team is not together. They just had the trials, and this tournament was too early for us,” Miranda said from Colorado Springs, Colo.
