A Costa Mesa man was arrested after slamming into five cars during a police chase that left a pregnant woman injured, authorities said Sunday.

Salvador Rangel Campos, 37, was being held on suspicion of felony drunk driving, felony hit-and-run and evading police officers in the chase that ended on Harbor Boulevard at 8:20 p.m. Saturday, Santa Ana police said.

The chase began when Campos narrowly missed hitting a marked Santa Ana patrol car as he turned north on Jackson Street near 5th Street and sped away in a red Camaro, Sgt. Phil Archer said.

The patrol officers took off after the car, which hit another car stopped at a red light at Harbor Boulevard and Hazard Avenue. As the two officers ran from their car to the Camaro, Archer said Campos rammed the car ahead of him a second time and sped off on Harbor Boulevard.

The two patrol officers raced back to their car and resumed the chase, which ended in the 1600 block of North Harbor Boulevard after the red Camaro slammed into four more cars, Archer said.

Campos was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was listed in satisfactory condition Sunday after treatment for head and internal injuries, police and hospital officials said.

Tracy Bush, a 21-year-old pregnant woman from Santa Ana who was in the car at the traffic light, also was taken to UCI Medical Center when she complained of pain. A nursing supervisor said Bush and her fetus were in stable condition.
