CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Officer Cleared in Death of Student
The California Highway Patrol says investigators found no evidence of criminal misconduct on the part of a school police officer who ran over and killed a 15-year-old boy in a field May 24. Officials said the conclusions are being reviewed by the Sacramento County district attorney’s office. Witnesses told the CHP that Gerald Markee had attacked students in a junior high school physical education class, then was chased by officials across the field in suburban Rio Linda. The CHP said Markee was looking over his shoulder at a pursuing school official when he veered to the right, into the path of Officer Curtis Carter’s patrol car. Markee had a blood-alcohol level of .17% and slipped and fell in front of the car, officers said.
