Ivan Lendl won a Wimbledon warmup tournament in Beckenham, England, beating Australian Darren Cahill, 6-3, 7-5.
The victory was only Lendl’s second on grass. He won last year’s event at The Queen’s Club.
“I thought this match was the best I played here all week,” Lendl said. “I have to be reasonably happy with things. It’s my history to be beaten or struggle in my first few matches on grass.”
Lendl struggled earlier in the day in the semifinals before beating David Wheaton, 6-7 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
Lendl said his victory should prepare him for Wimbledon, a tournament he has never won.
Defending champion Ros Fairbank of South Africa beat Gigi Fernandez, 7-5, 6-4, in the women’s final.
