7 Arrested After AIDS Protest to Supervisors

Share

In the latest protest by AIDS activists targeting the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, seven people were arrested Tuesday for disrupting the board’s meeting.

The demonstrators knelt in a front aisle as supervisors were beginning their meeting and, backed by about two dozen supporters, broke into a hymn in which they identified themselves as lesbians and gays “who are singing for our lives.”

Among those arrested were Dave Johnson, AIDS coordinator for the city of Los Angeles, and three people dressed as members of the clergy.

Supervisors are debating the 1990-91 budget, which calls for no increases in the $60 million for AIDS services allocated last year. AIDS activists are demanding at least $9 million more.

The seven protesters were arrested without incident.
