SIDELINES : Former Iowa QB Snook Dies
Gary Snook, who set University of Iowa football passing records that stood for 20 years, lost his battle with throat cancer.
Snook, 46, died at his home in Pomona on Sunday. The body was cremated.
Mike Cilek, another former Iowa quarterback, said Snook was the best pure passer in Iowa history. Snook played at Iowa from 1963-65, earning first-team All-Big Ten Conference honors in 1964.
“Chuck Long was obviously the best quarterback in Iowa history,” Cilek said. “But Gary could put the ball on a rope as far as anyone. From a pure passing standpoint, he was the best.”
Snook passed for 2,062 yards in 1964 and threw for 3,738 yards in his career. Those figures stood as school records until Long broke them in the mid-1980s.
