May brought more than rain. It was also a time for the State Board of Equalization to shower $23.7 million on the county’s 29 cities--the latest installment of sales and use tax revenues. The total amount for the county, $24.9 million, included funds earmarked for county agencies.

This most recent disbursement was 6% more than the county received last May, and the aggregate cities’ figure was 9% higher. But not all the municipalities did better this May than last. Tustin’s total was 33% below the comparable payment for 1989. Mission Viejo received 204% more than last year.

Each month, city and county governments and other governmental organizations receive payments from the state in anticipation of actual sales tax revenues. In the fourth month, they receive a cleanup payment--the difference between actual revenues and the amounts previously received--plus the first advance payment for the next quarter. The amounts listed here are for the third advance payment for the first quarter of 1990.
