Colorado quarterback Darian Hagan is reviewing his alternatives after he was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the recent major league free-agent baseball draft.

“He’s probably going to play baseball; he’ll play both,” Coach Bill McCartney said after Hagan received the Colorado Athlete of the Year Award during a banquet Wednesday night. “He’s weighing his options.”

Toronto selected Hagan in the 40th round. Hagan canceled a tryout with the team Tuesday because of the award dinner, but he expects to reschedule it at a later date.

Hagan, who will be a junior at Colorado this fall, said he isn’t sure if he will play in a rookie baseball league in Los Angeles, where he expects to spend the summer.

NCAA rules allow an athlete to retain eligibility while playing professionally in another sport.

McCartney said he believes Hagan will remain the Buffs’ quarterback for the next two seasons.

Hagan is the first player in the Big Eight Conference history to run and pass for 1,000 or more yards in a season.
