Share

A special memorial ceremony will be held Saturday in Simi Valley for Steven Sugimoto, a city planner who was killed this week when he was struck by a speeding car while riding his bicycle.

The ceremony will be held at the Simi Valley Development Services building at 3855-B Alamo St. beginning at 10 a.m., city officials said.

Friends and co-workers of Sugimoto, 28, a Moorpark resident, will plant a tree on the grounds and make a donation to the Sierra Club. Sugimoto was hit by a speeding car last Sunday while riding his bike west on California 118 near Hitch Road in Moorpark. He was taken to Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo, where he died from massive head injuries.

The motorist who struck Sugimoto tried to flee the scene of the accident but was later arrested by authorities after they received information about the driver from an eyewitness.

Daniel Oseguera was charged this week with vehicular manslaughter, drunk driving and felony hit-and-run with injury or death in connection with Sugimoto’s death. He is being held in Ventura County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
