Move El Toro, Tustin Marine Stations to George Air Force Base

Re the article “Orange County Accused of Exporting Its Woes to Inland Empire” (June 1): Orange County’s supervisors haven’t the nerve to make a decision if there is the slightest chance that the decision would alienate even the smallest group.

Case in point: the site for the new commercial airport.

Instead of pursuing the recommendations of the nearly two-year study by the Airport Site Coalition, they opted for George Air Force Base.

In so doing, they eliminated any possible objections from Orange County taxpayers.

The county officials stress that the 80 miles from Anaheim to George will be a “piece of cake” using the new high-speed rail system.

No cost and/or construction schedule information relative to this much-touted transport system has been made public. Without this system, George Air Force Base may as well be 800 miles from the Orange County population center.

The recommendation of George as an answer to Orange County’s air transportation represents a no-guts cop-out for county officials.

I recognize the results of the June 5 elections, but I recommend that people think long and hard about the makeup and character of county officials.

Future elections will give the voters a chance to change the course and correct some of Orange County’s outstanding problems.
