Detroit Symphony Faces Shutdown: The flutes and violins of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra will be silenced July 1 unless the financially troubled orchestra receives an $8-million state bailout. Robert Miller Jr., chairman of the orchestra’s board, asked donors to write letters backing the request, saying the demise of the symphony would be “a tragic loss and a national embarrassment to the people of Michigan.” The $8 million is intended to secure another $8 million in corporate pledges.
