Dennis Martinez wanted to do something special before his family left town.

He treated them to a four-hitter Monday night as the Montreal Expos beat the slumping Chicago Cubs 5-1, at Montreal.

“I knew I was going to pitch well when my family got here,” Martinez said. “Tonight was the first time they’ve all seen me pitch this year. They said I should do something for Fathers’ Day. It was a day late, but I’ll take it.”

Martinez (5-4) struck out five and walked one for his third complete game of the season.

Tom Foley, starting his third game at second base in place of Delino DeShields, had a two-run triple and a run-scoring double in support of Martinez.

Spike Owen played his 60th consecutive game this season without an error at shortstop, tying Kevin Elster, who set the record in 1988 for the New York Mets. Elster holds the major league mark for consecutive errorless games by a shortstop, 88, set over two seasons.

The Expos took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Mike Harkey (5-3) walked Larry Walker and Mike Fitzgerald, then gave up a two-run triple to Foley.

“I don’t know if I was tired from the trip,” Harkey said. “If I hadn’t walked those two guys, I wouldn’t have lost.”

San Francisco 2, San Diego 1--Trevor Wilson baffled San Diego for the second time in a week, and Matt Williams hit his 14th homer as the surging Giants beat San Diego at San Francisco for their 16th victory in 17 games this month.

It was also the Giants’ ninth consecutive victory, their longest winning streak since they won 10 in a row in 1982.

Wilson, who took a no-hitter into the ninth inning last Wednesday, gave up three hits and no runs in 6 1/3 innings and has held the Padres scoreless on four hits in 15 1/3 innings this season.
