2nd City Bans Holiday Sales of Ammunition

The San Fernando City Council has banned the sale of ammunition in the city during the eight days before the Fourth of July and New Year’s Day.

The City Council unanimously passed an urgency ordinance Monday night prohibiting ammunitions sales during the two periods in an effort to prevent accidents caused by the shooting of firearms in celebration of the two holidays, said Michael Graciano, acting city administrator.

“This is a very serious problem,” Graciano said. “Bullets are shot up in the air and travel 800 feet a second on the way down. Someone could get killed. It is an extremely dangerous way to celebrate.”

He said some automobiles in the city’s car lots were damaged by stray bullets in past years.

Graciano said only two stores in the city sell ammunition and that their owners agreed to abide by the prohibition. “This is not intended to be punitive,” Graciano said.

The ordinance was treated as an urgency matter so it could go into effect before July 4, he said.

The Los Angeles City Council approved a similar ban on ammunition sales last month.
