A cache of weapons, ammunition and explosive devices was found by Los Angeles police officers in a North Hollywood house where a man apparently was planning to commit suicide, authorities said Tuesday.

Officers removed seven rifles, one shotgun and 12 handguns from the residence in the 6500 block of Teesdale Avenue, Lt. Michael Ranshaw said. The Los Angeles Police Department bomb squad was called when officers found a tear-gas grenade, a smoke grenade and an artillery flash simulator, which were safely removed, he said.

Among the weapons were five assault-type rifles, Ranshaw said.

Police took Bruce Christison, 38, into protective custody at about 9 p.m. Monday after an anonymous caller reported that the man was in the house writing a note, with a gun nearby on the table, authorities said. Christison was placed under 72-hour psychiatric observation at Olive View Medical Center in Sylmar, Ranshaw said.

Ranshaw said police had not determined why Christison kept the weapons.
