Thompson Weighs Nuggets’ Offer
John Thompson said Tuesday he was “very excited” about an offer to become general manager and part owner of the Denver Nuggets but has not decided whether to leave Georgetown University after 18 years as the Hoyas’ basketball coach.
The former Boston Celtic reserve player talked like a man whose NBA luggage--if not packed--is at least out of the closet.
Thompson reportedly has been offered a package worth more than $6 million for four or five years, including a $700,000 annual salary as general manager and as much as 4% ownership of the Nuggets. That share would be worth about $2.8 million.
Thompson, who has taken the Hoyas to the NCAA tournament in 14 of his 18 years and won the 1984 national championship, said he would make his decision as soon as possible--but will first consult with university officials and his players.
