Compton : New Police Chief’s Priority Is More Officers on Patrol

Share

Putting more officers on the street is his first priority, says Compton’s new police chief, Terry R. Ebert, who was recently named to the post by City Manager Howard Caldwell.

Ebert said that under his command even detectives in the department will have to don uniforms and take their turn on patrol duty in an effort to stem the city’s high crime rate. The department has 132 officers and a yearly budget of around $15 million.

The 46-year-old Ebert, the city’s eighth police chief, was chosen from among three finalists to succeed Ivory Webb, who retired as chief early this year. Ebert holds an associate of arts degree in criminal justice from Long Beach City College and a bachelor’s degree in public administration from the University of Redlands.

He joined the Compton Police Department as a patrolman in 1969. Before becoming chief, Ebert was one of two commanders in the department.
