A 17-year-old Oxnard gang member was sentenced Monday to 180 days in Ventura County Juvenile Hall for supplying the gun that was used to murder a rival gang member in November.

Jesse Cortinas, a member of a Filipino gang called the Satanas, was sentenced in county Juvenile Court in the slaying of Manuel (Deadeye) Rodriguez, 20, of Oxnard, a member of a rival Latino gang called the Lemonwood Chiques.

Cortinas was allowed to plead guilty to murder in Juvenile Court and avoid being tried as an adult last month in exchange for his testimony against Arnel Salagubang, 20, of Oxnard, a former member of the Satanas.

Salagubang was convicted last month for Rodriguez’s murder. He is serving a state prison sentence of 20 years to life for second-degree murder and using a weapon during a felony.

Cortinas testified that Rodriguez drove past Channel Islands High School after classes Nov. 22, yelling anti-Asian slurs and gang slogans at a group of Satanas. Cortinas said he handed a single-shot .22-caliber derringer to Salagubang, who shot Rodriguez once in the head, killing him.

Cortinas will attend high school classes at nearby Colston Youth Center, Deputy Dist. Atty. James Irving said.
