Groundbreaking Held for $57-Million DWP Facility

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power officially began construction Monday of a $57-million facility in Sun Valley that will house a new water quality laboratory, computer center and office building.

“The rapid growth of the city and accompanying need for water and power services has dictated the need for additional space,” said Rick J. Caruso, president of the Board of Water and Power Commissioners, at groundbreaking ceremonies for the new James H. Anthony Center. The center is on a 35-acre plot of city-owned land east of the Hollywood Freeway in the northeastern San Fernando Valley. Anthony, former director of the DWP’s Intermountain Power Project, died of cancer in 1989.

About 1,400 DWP employees who currently work at the department’s General Office Building in downtown Los Angeles will transfer to the new facility, which is expected to be finished by November, 1991.
