SIDELINES : Cubs Hang On to Zimmer, Frey
The Chicago Cubs announced today that they have picked up the option on Manager Don Zimmer’s contract for the 1991 season and extended the contract of General Manager Jim Frey through 1992.
The announcement was made by team President Don Grenesko before the game between the Montreal Expos and the Cubs.
“I said before there was no need to rush into this thing,” Grenesko said. “But this thing kept coming up, and somebody would ask me about it every day.
“I’m pleased with the performances of both Frey and Zimmer. Both are experienced baseball men, and we are moving in the right direction.
“We’re not happy with the performance of the team this year, but injuries have played a key role and four or five players have not performed up to their capabilities. Frey has demonstrated he can put together a championship team.”
The Cubs, who won the National League East last year, are mired in the cellar with a 29-43 record.
